This quote has made it into many books and social media quotes, because it is so accurate.
Your habits can and will make you a French speaker if you know which habits to create in the first place. Here are the two most important French learning Habits. Do these daily and watch how fast you make progress.
Note: In my group program, The French Fluency Accelerator, we have a 72-minute workshop about creating and sticking to an efficient French learning routine. If you are serious about learning French, I recommend checking out The French Fluency Accelerator.
#1 The daily French bath.
This simply consists in listening to some French content everyday. Radio, podcasts, youtube, netflix, TV, anything goes. Bonus point if you pick things that you really enjoy because your brain learns better when you’re having fun.
If you think “how the help can this help me?” think again.
When you were a child, this is exactly how you learned your native language. You didn’t understand anything at first, and you didn’t care. It just sort of grow into you.
As an adult you retain this capacity. All it takes it have enough of the language around and not block your learning with negative beliefs such as “this doesn’t work” or “I’ll never get fluent”. Limiting beliefs can really limit you but this is a topic for another article. I have a free workshop called the Conversation Key which addresses this topic in depth. Click here if you’d like to dive into this.
So, put some French around you when you drive, cook, work out, clean or do anything that doesn’t require your full attention. It works like magic.
And you can even boost the power of this habit by introducing a little bit of focused study into your day, such as...
#2 The vocabulary review.
Every day, review your newest vocabulary for 5 minutes.
Concretely you can just write the latest words in a notebook and carry it around to review in any downtime you have, like waiting at the cash desk or waiting for a meeting to start. Or you can make this a habit a part of your routine by tying it to another habit you have such as your lunch or your morning coffee.
The trick is to limit the amount of words you put in there. I recommend less than 10 words a day, otherwise you won’t be able to remember them. And choose the words that are most useful to you. Words you will really need to use when you speak French.
These are the two habits that I insist all my clients develop: the daily French bath and the daily vocabulary review. If you develop both of them, you will be amazed at the progress you make. You will suddenly be able to remember what you learn in class and you will be able to speak much more easily. Just try it.
