In this article, I am sharing the exact system I use with clients & in my group program.
I have fine tuned this system through trial and error over 15 years of teaching and coaching, including a masters degree in language teaching. There is a lot that goes into it. This article is meant to give you an overview of the system and to help you better understand how all the elements which I share in other articles fit together.
A comprehensive French learning system
Whenever I get a new client, I start by creating for them their Roadmap to Fluency. It has 3 pages and it looks like this.
If you join my group program, the French Fluency Accelerator, you’ll start by learning how to create a similar plan for yourself. In that program, every page corresponds to a 60-90 minute workshop. I’m summarising quickly here so you get the gist. If you’d like to join us and get the full version, just click here to learn more and sign up.
Part 1: Activities & Schedule
The whole Roadmap is personalised. Page 1 features the routine and schedule for your French study. It needs to be tailored for your current daily life.
This isn’t about overhauling your entire life. On the contrary, we are seeking to integrate your French study in your existing routine as seamlessly as possible.
This page features:
One time actions - A few things you need to do when you start using the system (like for example evaluating your level for the first time or getting a notebook for your vocabulary)
Daily actions - These are the winning French learning habits you’ll want to develop. (more about this in this article about powerful French learning habits)
Weekly actions - Typically you’ll have at least one focused study session either with me or with a tutor, teacher, coach or language partner.
Monthly actions - Once a month you need to review the plan to track your progress and make sure it’s still up to date.
Part 2: Content to study
This part is also highly personalised. It details the things that *you* (not someone else) need to learn in order to reach your ideal French level - which is not the same as the next person’s, simply because you have your own goals, dreams, career and priorities.
I have written a very detailed article that explains this part in detail, how to create it and how to use it to track your progress.
Part 3: Resources
This is where you list the helpful resources that you have. For example, good books that fit your level and French content that you’ll enjoy watching or listening to for the sake of it, and for your daily French bath.
I’ve written about the daily French bath in my article about learning French in just one click - which is something you can do if you know what to click on. So the links to click on are kept on this page.
It’s also highly personalised, because what you enjoy isn’t the same thing as what everybody enjoys. For every single client I make a list of French resources that I think they’ll like, based on what they tell me about themselves. I actually spend an hour listening to you and learning about you so I can make your personal Roadmap.
So, this is the system that we use. It looks simple enough and it is highly actionable, even if you have absolutely no language learning experience.
As I said, there is a lot more that goes into it than just what I shared in this article. So if you’d like to know more, you can read other articles on this website.
